Georgia Wine and Cheese Tour

6 Days | Tbilisi, Telavi, Alavardi, Napareuli, Tsinandali, Gremi, Tkhilistskaro, Sighnaghi, Poka, Akhaltsikhe, Borjomi, Mtskheta

 

Day 1: Tbilisi - Arrival /City Tour

Arrive in Tbilisi. You will be met by driver and transferred to the hotel. Check-in at noon. You will start your journey in Georgia with Tbilisi city tour at Metekhi church and Vakhtang Gorgasali monument, the legendary founder of Tbilisi. Take cable car to Narikala Fortress to enjoy breathtaking panoramic view of the city. Walk down to the district of Sulphur bath houses passing by the only mosque in Tbilisi. Stroll through the Sharden area full of narrow streets with cozy cafés, wine tasting bars, souvenir shops, and breathe in the living past. Visit Sioni Cathedral, Anchiskhati Basilica, and the clock tower of famous Rezo Gabriadze Theatre. After head to St. George statue in the center of the Freedom square. Next, visiting wine bar Vino Underground, where you’ll taste natural organic and bio wines from all around Georgia. Overnight at the hotel.

Day 2: Tbilisi – Alaverdi – Napareuli – Tsinandali – Telavi

After breakfast depart towards the Kakheti region, the cradle of Georgian wine. Beautiful road lies through Gombori pass. Our first stop will be at Alaverdi monastery, one of the most amazing Georgian historical sights, also famous for monastery wine production. Next stop will be at private winery Twins Wine Cellar in Napareuli village. The premises of the winery include a vast vineyard, museum of traditional Georgian winemaking in qvevri, and facilities for various workshops. Try yourself at baking Georgian bread puri, cooking national dessert churchkhela. An excellent round-up of the visit will be tasting five different wines produced at Twins Winery. Continue to Tsinandali, the residence of dukes of Georgia with beautiful English garden, a museum, and the wine cellar which belonged to prince Chavchavadze, 19th century public figure and poet. Drive to Telavi, the administrative and historic center of the region. Have a short walk through charming streets of old Telavi and have a photo stop at the monument to Erekli II. Overnight at the hotel.

Meals: Lunch with wine degustation at Twins cellar.

Day 3: Telavi – Gremi – Tkhilistskaro – Sighnaghi – Tbilisi 

After breakfast drive to Gremi architectural complex, a 16th century royal residence and the capital of Kakheti Kingdom. Gloomy and monumental, Gremi castle is one of the most visited tourist sights in Georgia. Drive to Chateu Bruale winery in Tkhilistskaro village where you will have a traditional lunch with degustation of family wine. Also, you will participate in cheese making master class with a local lady. Continue to Sighnaghi, the city of love and the Royal Town, one of the crossroads of the Great Silk Road surrounded by defensive walls with 23 towers. Visit the Pheasant’s Tears winery in Sighnaghi where you will taste artisanal wines produced according to Georgian traditions. If time allows visit Bodbe convent. The legend says it is a burial place of St. Nino, who converted Georgia to Christianity in the 4th century. Since 1889 Bodbe complex has been functioning as a nunnery in accordance with the decree of Tsar Alexader III of Russia. Drive to Tbilisi. Overnight at the hotel.

Day 4: Tbilisi – Poka – Akhaltsikhe 

After breakfast head to the south of Georgia. You will be fascinated with the versatility of nature in Georgia while driving through the road to Samtkhe-Javakheti region of Georgia passing by biggest lake in the country – Paravani Lake. Arrive to Poka nunnery / St. Nino Monastery (11th century). Here you’ll have a chance to taste different kind of unique Georgian cheese: white and red Abuli, Javakhetian blue, Albio in pot and others prepared by old Georgian traditions and other local products, such as jams, oil, chocolate, and honey. Continue driving to Akhaltsikhe. Overnight at the hotel.

Day 5: Akhaltsikhe – Borjomi – Mtskheta – Tbilisi 

In the morning have a tour inside Rabati fortress. Rabati means “fortified place” in Arabic. The stone fortress stands on the small hill on the very shores of the Potskhovi River. Next stop will be in Borjomi. Take a walk in National Park famous for mineral water reserves and taste true Borjomi water straight from the spring. After, you will drive to Mtskheta. On the way visit Nebi - Aslanishvili Winery. Winery at Chardakhi village where you’ll have a chance to experience traditional Georgian lunch and taste special wine of Arsena’s family winery. Arrive to Mtskheta, one of the oldest towns of Georgia. Mtskheta was the capital of the Eastern Georgian Kingdom of Iberia from the third century BC to the 5th century AD. Visit Svetitskhoveli , the main cathedral of the city and a sacred place where the robe of Christ is being kept. Reach Tbilisi for overnight at the hotel.

Day 6: Tbilisi - Departure 

Check-out from the hotel at noon. Free time until transfer to Tbilisi International Airport. End of the tour.
