Kutaisi-Martvili Tour

2 Days | Kutaisi, Ubisa, Shrosha, Bagrati, Gelati, Motsameta, Nokalakevi, Martvili Canyon, Prometheus Cave

Day 1: Tbilisi – Kutaisi – Bagrati – Gelati – Motsameta – Kutaisi

At 09:00 am our driver and guide will pick you up from your hotel in Tbilisi. Drive to Kutaisi, the central city of Western Georgia, once called Aia (230 km). The road to Kutaisi will take you over the Rikoti Pass and through the longest tunnel in Georgia (1,722 m), considered as a border between the western and eastern parts of Georgia. On the way visit Ubisa Monastery, famous for its well-preserved and colorful frescoes, dating from the 9th century. Have another stop at the village, Shrosha, where you will have a chance to see the diversity of Georgian pottery: "doqi" - jug, "piala" - bowl, " ketsi" - plate and many more, made from clay that is extracted from the soil of the area. Arrive to Kutaisi, the second biggest city in Georgia, which according to the legend was the ultimate destination of the Jason and Argonauts searching for the Golden Fleece. In Kutaisi, visit the Bagrati Cathedral (11th century) - one of the best samples of medieval architecture, towering over Kutaisi and visible from almost any point of the city. Next stop is the Gelati Academy (12th century), built by King David the Builder. Gelati was the center of spiritual and scientific life in the Middle Ages, the tomb of Georgian kings, and a popular place for pilgrims. It is under UNESCO protection as an object of cultural and historical legacy. Continue to Motsameta Monastery to enjoy fantastic views over the gorge. Drive back to Kutaisi for overnight at the hotel.

Day 2: Kutaisi – Martvili canyon – Nokalakevi – Prometheus cave – Tbilisi

In the morning, drive to Nokalakevi, located by the Tekhuri River, a historical fortress famous for early Byzantine historians as Archeopolis. This fortress played a part in the major wars fought between the Byzantines and Sasanians in the south Caucasus in the 6th century AD. Continue on the tour to Martvili Canyon. On the way to Martvili you will pass local villages with charming yards typical only to this area. Take a small boat trip inside the canyon, and see one of the nature's most wonderful creations – a steep waterfall. After that, enter the gorge's other side and stroll over the canyon's waters, watching the water change its colors with every turn and stone. This is the best place for photos. An excellent end of this day is the famous Prometheus cave, with numerous stalactites and stalagmites. Return to Tbilisi, drop-off at your hotel.
